5 Reasons Your Head Lice Won’t Go Away and What to Do About It

Some 6-12 million people are afflicted with head lice each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Many end up struggling with head lice for weeks, months, or even years. Why are head lice so difficult to get out of your life?  5 Reasons Your Head Lice Won’t Go Away and What to Do About It:
  1. Over-the-counter treatments don’t work. The resistance of head lice to the most popular drugstore products is well-researched and well-documented. The most recent report, issued in 2016, found that most lice in 42 states are now resistant to pyrethroids.   Pyrethroids are the active ingredient in over-the-counter lice products.
  2. Nitpicking is subject to human error. The most effective alternative to drugstore lice products has traditionally been nitpicking. This is the process of combing out live lice, then playing a daunting cat-and-mouse game with the lice eggs (nits). They are tiny—about the size of sesame seed—and they attach themselves with the insect equivalent of superglue to hair shafts. The problem is, that if you miss a single nit, they will hatch, then live lice will multiply again, and you’ll have a fresh infestation.
  3. Failing to get every member of the household checked. Too often, parents assume that the child that was found to have lice at school or daycare is the only one with lice. That’s unlikely. Because lice spread primarily from close head-to-head contact or from shared hair accessories like brushes, it’s common for the entire family to contract head lice, including parents! If only one person in the family is checked and treated, the lice will likely come back to that person from another family member.
  4. Home remedies are unproven at best, dangerous at worst. You can search the Internet for lice solutions and find mommy-bloggers and others that swear by home treatments like mayonnaise, petroleum jelly, olive oil, and even kerosene. The methods vary, but in general, this involves covering a child’s head with one of these substances overnight, which also means covering the kid’s head with some kind of plastic wrap. First, a child sleeping with plastic on its head risks suffocation. Second, substances like kerosene are highly flammable and should not be used.

Now the Good News

There are two surefire ways to rid anyone of head lice. First, is shaving the head of the person with lice. No hair, no lice! But that’s not going to go over well with most kids. Now, however, there is the AirAllé® medical device, cleared by the FDA and clinically proven to kill live lice and 99.2 percent of nits in a single session. The AirAllé® device uses only heated air to dehydrate lice and eggs—an ingenious approach that bypasses the hassles and risks of traditional treatments. The results are guaranteed when all family members are checked for lice and all infested family members are treated.
The AirAllé® treatment is available exclusively at Lice Clinics of America treatment centers throughout the world. There are more than 150 clinics in the United States and another 100 or so in 20 other nations. Lice Clinics of America is the largest and fastest-growing professional lice removal service in the world.

Is it Head Lice or Dandruff?

2000 study by researchers at the Laboratory of Public Health Entomology at the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) found that healthcare workers, parents, and school officials often misdiagnose and inappropriately medicate head lice infestations. Parents are left scratching their heads, is it head lice or dandruff?
The researchers asked readers to submit examples of what they thought were head lice or lice eggs. The readers completed questionnaires that also asked them to identify their relationship to the infested person (parent, nurse, etc.) and the measures taken to treat the perceived infestation.
“An uncomfortably large proportion of the submissions had nothing to do with head lice, yet in every case someone suspected they were head lice or louse eggs,” said Richard Pollack, instructor in immunology and infectious diseases and lead author of the study.
Of the 614 submissions, 41 percent had nothing to do with head lice, but instead were objects, often dandruff. Of the submissions that were associated with lice, about half seemed to be signs of infestations that were now extinct with dead lice being detected. Only active infestations (consisting of lice and/or live eggs) should be treated, the researchers said.
Parents were the most likely to misdiagnose the issue. How do you know if your child has head lice or dandruff?

Location, Location, Location

First and foremost is the location of the detected substance. Lice lay their eggs about a quarter of an inch from the scalp—they need the warmth of the human body to incubate and survive. So, an egg found at that proximity would suggest an active infestation. Anything found farther away from the scalp would most likely be a dead egg or empty nit (from which a lice nymph has already hatched).
Also, dandruff and other substances are likely to shake easily out of the hair. Lice eggs and nits on the other hand, are fastened tightly to hair strands and require a fine-toothed comb and nimble fingers to be removed.
If you comb your child’s hair with a lice comb, wipe it on a white paper towel and look closely at what you have removed from the hair. Unlike dandruff, the lice eggs will look like dark specks with a tiny tail. The “tail” is actually the part where the egg was fastened to the hair. Anything moving on the paper towel would be a louse since dandruff, obviously, won’t crawl.

What is Dandruff

Dandruff is a common form of skin eczema, also called Seborrheic dermatitis. It is believed that dandruff is caused by the continual production of oil on the scalp, which dries and turns into flakes. It is only called dandruff when the condition is on the human scalp. While it can take different forms, dandruff usually looks like thick flakes or scales (either white or yellowish in color), and can occur together with red, irritated skin.
Neither dandruff nor head lice present any serious health risks. Lice don’t spread disease, and dandruff can be easily treated with a medicated shampoo.
If lice are found, there are new treatments available that make getting rid of the bugs about as difficult as getting a haircut. Lice Clinics of America has introduced a breakthrough in lice treatment in the form of its AirAllé device, an FDA-cleared Class I medical device clinically proven to kill live lice and more than 99 percent of eggs in a single treatment that takes about an hour.

Vacation Lice

I don't know about your family but our family starts a countdown the second we plan a vacation. FYI it is 62 days before we head to the beach for a week with my whole family.

Last year we had just started the business and had a short cruise out of Baltimore planned. We were going to be gone a couple of days but something told me a couple of days before leaving to get a head check.

Into the shop my husband and I went, he put on his headset, got out a stick, parted my hair and exclaimed, "Winner winner chicken dinner!!."

Yup - I had lice. I called my dad and asked him to pick the kids up from camp and bring them in so we could check them too.

Sure I knew the AirAlle was the greatest way to get rid of lice so I wasn't worried at all. I was so thankful that we found it before boarding that cruise ship. The last thing I would have wanted to focus on was combing lice out of my hair while finally having some awesome family time.

Now, whenever we are going to be away from home I get a head check just to make sure. I also keep a bottle of the Super Lice Fighters finishing rinse in our suitcase because if we should find lice I know using that gives me at least a week to get the heat. Kills all the bugs with no chemicals and I can go about having fun.

Sadly lately we have had several customers come in who found lice while on that wonderful family vacation. Places like Disneyworld, Paris, the beach and a Disney Cruise. Just breaks my heart they had to worry about something like lice while they should have been having the time of their lives.

Plan those before vacation head checks and always keep a bottle of the Super Lice Fighters Oil Treatment in your suitcase

One Year!!

One year ago today we were finally finished working on the clinic and just had to set everything up. I was going to savor it - it was exciting - and our planned opening day was May 1st with a possible soft opening the week before.

Then the phone rang. Someone had heard about us and they were desperate. They had been treating unsuccessfully with OTC treatments and couldn't take it anymore. They were wondering if I could possibly see them tomorrow.

I stood there looking around at the mess and said, "Absolutely we can see you tomorrow!!" Our new open date was now April 21st and I had about 11 hours to get the shop ready. It was a good push for us because even though I knew I could do it and was so excited - I was still nervous. We had put in so much work to get to this point and a small part of me was putting off taking that final leap. I was so happy we got that call because it was the greatest leap ever!

Here are those 11 hours condensed into 2 minutes: (there are some glitches with the video where it looks like we stop moving and then starts up again)

It has been an amazing first year. I love what we do. Every day we get to help people deal with something that no one wants to deal with. Something that totally stresses people out. Something that can just break you as a parent. I know because I was there. After I got over the initial, "Oh my gosh we have bugs" it was the combing day in and day out that broke me. The worry I just wasn't getting it all and we were going to be dealing with this forever. And then you read stuff online and it can make you crazy.

Now we get to help people with the real cure for head lice; without using any chemicals. I love knowing that as they leave and say, "Liz it has been great meeting you but I hope I never see you again." that wish can actually be fulfilled because there is no tedious follow-up required of them. Some washing and house cleaning and life is back to normal.

All of this has made such a wonderful first year as Lice Clinics of America Rockville. We are the Super Lice Fighters!! I wake up happy every morning knowing that I love what I do and love that we can provide such an exceptional service to our community.

As a child my dad told me all the time, "Find something you love to do and you will never work a day in your life." It may have taken me some time but I finally did it and he was so right!!

All of us are looking forward to our second year and our second clinic. New and exciting things are happening all the time all while meeting new and exciting people each day.
